DOT Reflective conspicuity tape is mandated by law. (CCMTA & FHWA)
All vehicles over 10 000 lb. or 80" wide require DOT approved conspicuity tape. This is the most powerful reflective product available.
Conspicuity tape is retro-reflective, using micro prisms to redirect light directly back to the source. An oncoming motorist will thus see the full power of the reflection when the light from his headlights is reflected back to his eyes (assuming of course he has his headlights on!) There are 3 North American manufacturers of conspicuity grade tapes (3M, Reflexite and Avery). Some products have slightly higher reflectivity, some are warranted for longer periods (5 year, 7 year and 10 years) and all have different levels of angular reflection.
Important note to straight body truck and “smaller” trailer OEMs & their distributors:
“We put safety first!!!”
Even if your trucks & trailers are NOT mandated by law requiring the installation of DOT tape during production, you should consider the message you are transmitting to the public. For pennies per foot, you can proclaim loud and clear that “we put safety first”. DOT tape is definitely safer and should be added! Hit a “grand slammer” by combining safety and marketing by adding your OEM or distributor logo in the tape.

STICK-ON REFLECTORS
Because of their low profile and extremely aggressive tack, "Stick-on" reflectors resist impacts and other damage better than "screw-on" reflectors. They continue to function even if damaged.
These are DOT approved. Their “direct and angular” reflectivity exceeds all standards.
3M™ Diamond Grade™ Conspicuity Markings Series 983 are highly retroreflective prismatic markings designed to mark the emergency exits, sides and rear of vehicles for enhanced visibility and detection. The reflective marking consists of prismatic lenses that are formed in a transparent, synthetic resin, sealed and backed with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and clear poly liner. These markings are available in a variety of colors and configurations to meet general and Industry specific requirements such as DOT (truck trailer), FRA (railcar), NFPA1901 (emergency vehicle), FMVSS and CSA D250 (school bus).
Round 3M reflectors are 3" in diameter.

KISS-CUT TAPES
“Kiss-cut” means the reflective part ONLY (not the “backer”) is cut at precise increments to avoid the extra labor in cutting off precise sections of tape with an “Exacto” blade or scissors. Since the cut does not penetrate the backer, the entire product still remains on one roll. When required, the increments are simply lifted off the backer. Additional time and effort are saved since there is no "picking" at corners to separate the backer from the reflective part as is the case when the tape is cut completely through. SAVE TIME AND COSTS! This product is extremely useful for OEM's that regularly install 12" or 18" or 24" pieces and especially useful for the 12" all-white corners of trailers.

Although not always required by law, the use of high intensity conspicuity grade reflective tape is a “must” for "safety-oriented" companies, cities and Ministry of Transport vehicles. Your image of "safety first" is proclaimed "loud and clear" to all citizens who see that you are "over and above" the “legal” requirements for safety.
Although some utility vehicles don't "work" at night, the 6 months of dusk and dawn during “work hours” is still dangerous because of reduced daylight. Increased visibility using high intensity conspicuity tape prevents accidents. Especially with vehicles used on highways and worse yet, in adverse weather conditions, being "too" visible does not exist. Greater visibility with high intensity conspicuity grade reflective tapes enhances motorist safety.
Municipalities and fleets can now order DOT conspicuity tape with their personalized logo or city ID or crest. This identifies equipment or vehicles and also prevents theft.
