8. HOW TO IDENTIFY & MATCH YOUR PRESENT DOT CONSPICUITY TAPE?

There are three North American brands of DOT approved tape (3M, Avery & Reflexite)

  • All have warrantee options, meaning the luminous intensity will not fall below the minimum of 250 candels power before the indicated term. They will still keep reflecting for much longer, but once the luminous intensity falls below the minimum, they should be changed.

  • All tapes are negatively affected by ultra violet and infra red rays from the sun.

  • OEM grades usually start with a higher luminous intensity and have more protective coats, designed to make them last longer.

  • It is recommended that OEM’s use a tape warranted longer than 5 years.

  • Five years or under is often marketed as “retrofit” grade.
